5 Tips to Endless Summer Curly Hair

21 May

endless summerHey guys!!

When I think of summer, I think of beaches, short shorts, neon, ray-bans, and strappy sandals. Add to that, lemonade stands, snow cones, and summer music festivals. Then I think, oh God, my hair is about to be so dry and crispy. I am sure we all know how damaging the summer sun can be to our skin. It is even tougher on curly hair, BUT it doesn’t have to be that way, friends. I’m vowing this summer to have moisture rich curls, twists, braid outs, and coils and you should too!

Here are my top 5 Ways to Endless Summer Curly Hair:

  1. Cool it with the Shampoo! In the summer, too much shampooing can remove all the good nutrients from your hair and scalp. Instead, condition and wet your hair more often. Say, every shower? I normally wet my hair, whether washing it or not, in the shower the morning of a hot summer day. But you say, “Girl I’m trying to get right for the summer, I’ll be in the gym and running Townlake. I need a shampoo to clarify my hair!” Okay. Okay. If you insists. If your hair needs to be cleaned, try a co-wash. If you are not sure what a co-wash is, no worries I will be doing a little review on one real soon.
  2. Give them something to Drink. Your hair is thirsty. Find your perfect moisturizer and/ or make a fun summer cocktail for your hair. Just remember, oil is NOT a moisturizer. It can seal in the moisture, and that should be the last step in the process.
  3. Add Heat Protection. Like the skin needs sunscreen so the hair needs heat protection. Most times, when I think of heat protection, I think of a clear spray or serum for when I am using hot styling tools or blow drying. However, using those same heat protecting products without the hot tools is a much better idea. Just spray some of your favorite heat protection product on before leaving the house. Another way to protect your hair from the heat is by trying out protective hair styles or just wearing a hat. BTW….
  4. Chill on the Hot Tools! Put down those blow dryers, straighteners, curly irons and curly rods. Why dry your hair when it is hot and dry outside? Leave it wet and let it air dry. Besides, in the 110 degree Texas weather, wet hair feels AHHHH-mazing. If you are not in Texas, this still applies. I see you California.
  5. Stay silky, my friends! A silk scarf can change lives. That is probably just a hyperbole. Tie a silk scarf around your curly locks at night, or try a satin or silk pillowcase. Your cotton pillowcase will pull the hair causing breakage. Broke hair is weak hair, and broke hair never has any fun. Cotton pillowcases also pull moisture from your hair. Remember, your hair is #thirsty. :)

Hope this helps!
